What's been happening in the Grade 3/4 area?

This term 3/4S have had great fun doing some Science experiments. We have learnt about Surface Tension.
One experiment we did involved making a paper clip float! It was very hard to do but by the end of the session we did it. We put a small piece of paper in a container with water, then we put the paper clip on top. Next we very, very, gently pulled the paper off and the paper clip just floated!

In another interesting experiment called, The Running Pepper, we had containers with water. We sprinkled some pepper on the top of the water. Then we put a drop of dishwashing liquid on our finger and dipped it in the peppered water. We watched the pepper just run away! The dishwashing liquid broke the surface tension and made the paper run to the sides.

Our third experiment was called The Speed Boat. It involved cutting a small paper boat shape out of paper. We put the boat in our water container. Next we put a drop of dish washing liquid in the water and observed the boat just glide along the surface of the water really fast!

These are just a few of the experiments we did. They were fun to do and we had to use skills like predicting, observing and explaining. We learnt a lot about surface tension and how to break surface tension.

Science is fun!

What's been happening in the Prep - 2 Junior Site?

This term we have been learning all about communities and how to be safe in our community. The Preps, Grade 1’s and Grade 2’s had a visit from Connex to teach us all how to stay safe when we use public transport. We learnt why it’s important to stay BEHIND the yellow line at train stations and the importance of Stop, Look, Listen, Think when stopping at a rail crossing. Damian showed us how to be respectful and responsible transport users!

Prep - 2 Literacy Centres

Every Tuesday and Thursday mornings all Prep - Grade 2 students participate in our Literacy Centre rotations. During this block students work in small groups to complete tasks with either a parent helper or their teacher. Some of the activities they are involved in include writing (storywriting, punctuation/editing skills, handwriting/letter formation), reading (big book, individual or guided), computer activities and comprehension and word games.
All teachers involved would like to thank all the wonderful parent helpers that have offered their help and supported us with our rotations. If any parents are able to help and have not yet spoken to their child's teacher, please come and see us!

Each contest consists of five difficult mathematical problems. Each year Glen Huntly Primary has students from Grades 3 - 6 participating which culminates in the presentation of certificates and a trophy for the Maths whizzes in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6.
The dates for 2009 are 13th May, 10th June, 29th July, 19th August and 16th September.
Good luck to all our students!
