Glen Huntly – Runners Up – District Swimming Sports!

On Friday, 26th February a determined squad of 21 swimmers and divers made the scenic walk through Lord’s park to Caulfield Memorial Pool to compete in the District Swimming Sports Carnival. It was a beautiful sunny day as G.H.P.S’s team, led by Gemma (5/6P), took their spot under the shade close to the starting blocks and diving pool.

The first event was the diving and Jade (5/6J) could not have started in better fashion by taking out first place in the 12/13 girls section. This was just the right medicine for her teammates as it brought them closer together and gave them confidence and voice for the rest of the day.

The day was filled with brilliant and courageous performances by all the members of G.H.P.S’s swimming/diving squad. The sportsmanship shown was tremendous and the cheering and support was first class. All students made extra special efforts to encourage and console each other throughout the day.

When it was announced that Glen Huntly had come second in the standardised competition a loud eruption of joy was heard all over the suburb. It was a tremendous result for the swim squad and the school. Timothy (5/6J) accepted the runners-up pennant as Gemma was unavailable at the time. His speech was honourable and gracious as he thanked all the other schools for a great day of fun and sportsmanship.

Overall, it was a fantastic day. A big congratulations must go to all members of the team.

The Story So Far – The History of Glen Huntly Primary School No 3703, 1914 – 2009

On 14th March this year, Glen Huntly Primary School celebrated its 95th Birthday.
To commemorate this wonderful milestone, an updated history of the School has been written with photographs, reports, reflections, stories, and records from many people, present and past. Up-to-date details and photographs of what has been happening at the school lately (e.g. the current building of our new Art Room on the West Site and Carnival) have been included.

On many occasions over the past few years, discussions have taken place about how good it would be to continue writing and adding to the existing history, which recorded significant events and memories about the school that took place over 75 years until 1989. The work, time, energy and detail which has gone into writing the history of Glen Huntly P.S. has been phenomenal and we feel extremely fortunate that we have been given this opportunity to recall, reflect and report on our school in the school’s 95th year.

Every child and teacher presently at the school is mentioned in the book and you are now part of the fabric of the school’s history, which is very exciting. This is a very important book, not only for the School community, but for the Glen Huntly/Glen Eira Community and having read most of the draft, I know it is a book that your family will enjoy reading. It will be placed on the shelves of the National and State Libraries as a comprehensive record of what led up to the establishment of the School and school life up to 2009.

It is extremely satisfying to now have the 1914 – 2009 edition in print and ready to be shared. This 2009 publication is the result of the collective efforts of present and past members of the school community but in particular I would like to acknowledge our Event’s Coordinator, Shirley Mirams who has been the driving force behind this work and who has added so much to it.

Copies of the book will be available from the school Office mid December. Please contact the school if you are interested in purchasing a copy.
