Teaching and Learning Focus
Term 1 - Our Whole School Throughline is 'Growing Up Great and Safe.'
Level 1 - Preps
Our Preps - Drawing self portraits and having fun outside!
In Prep we introduce the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make using the Letterland Program. Each letter of the alphabet is associated with a sound, for example C is Clever Cat. The children learn sight vocabulary in preparation for formal reading. Our take-home reading program begins in Term 2. We have a Reading Information Night for our Prep Parents in March.
In terms 2, 3 and 4 we run Literacy Centre rotations twice a week. Please see below for more details.
The children participate in weekly sessions of PMP (Perceptual Motor Program). Parents are invited to assist during these activities.
Preps with their readers!
Prep - 2 Literacy Centres
Every Tuesday and Thursday mornings all Prep - Grade 2 students participate in our Literacy Centre rotations. During this block students work in small groups to complete tasks with either a parent helper or their teacher. Some of the activities they are involved in include writing (storywriting, punctuation/editing skills, handwriting/letter formation), reading (big book, individual or guided), computer activities and comprehension and word games. All teachers involved would like to thank all the wonderful parent helpers that have offered their help and supported us with our rotations.

Level 2 - Grade 1 and 2
This Term Level 2 is learning about Healthy Lifestyles. We are very lucky to have a vegetable garden at our school, so we picked vegetables from our own garden to make our soup. Here is the recipe for our soup:
Cauliflower, Broccoli and Silverbeet Soup
Ingredients
4 Cauliflower
2 Broccoli
Few leaves of Silverbeet
4 medium onions
8 potatoes
4 level dessert spoons of vegetable stock powder (e.g. Massell)
8 tablespoons of olive oil
Water
Served with
Cream
Grated Cheese
Method
Cut up onions and fry in olive oil until translucent. Peel and dice potatoes and add to the onion mixture, frying for a couple of minutes. Break washed cauliflower and broccoli into pieces and add to the pot with water to almost cover the ingredients. Add pieces of silverbeet and add the stock powder. Bring to boil. Cover and simmer for approximately 20 minutes until the vegetables are soft.
Blend until smooth. Serve with cream or grated cheese.
SOLIDS TO LIQUIDS
In Science, the Grade 1 and 2 students explored the question “Can we change a solid?”
The students conducted an experiment called “Chocolate Surprise”.
Students placed solid pieces of chocolate into a hot fondue and watched for changes. They made predictions, observations and explained the outcomes.
Grade 1 student Shaurya predicted “We can change a solid. Solid chocolate will melt if we heat it.” During the experiment he made the observation “The chocolate is melting”. After the experiment he explained “The solid chocolate, Nestle Melts, at a temperature of 45 °C are now a liquid”.
Level 3 - Grade 3 and 4
During Term, Level three students have been focusing on reading and writing recounts and narratives. Children have been writing about their holidays, special school events and have started to publish their own stories into books.
In Integrated studies the students have followed the school’s throughline “Growing up Great and Safe.” The emphasis has been on teamwork, co-operation and friendship.
This term, grade 3/4 have done a lot of work on What Makes a Good Friend; qualities we admire in others and hope to achieve ourselves. All the children produced a WANTED poster listing qualities they like in a friend. They also reflected on their own positive qualities and made a butterfly showing these.
Children have also been involved in Tribes activities where they had to work in pairs and small groups to achieve a common goal. Stand Up was one such activity. Everyone had to sit back to back with their legs bent, elbows linked then they had to stand up. It was hard work but a huge amount of fun!
On Friday 20th March, past and present students, staff and parents celebrated Glen Huntly Primary School's 95th Birthday. We combined the event with our Harmony Day celebrations, which resulted in a fantastic day had by all. Below are some stories written by our Grade 3's and 4's.
On the 20th of March it was the school’s 95th birthday plus the Harmony Day celebrations. There were people who had come to our school and the library was full of photos from 1914-2008. Each class had an item from a different country. At the end Hazel and Zara cut the cake.

On Friday 20th March it was Harmony Day. On Harmony Day people were wearing orange or a national costume. I wore an Asian costume. After lunch we had the concert for Harmony Day. In the concert I played ‘’It’s a Small World’’ with my recorder and did the Australian bush dance. My favourite song or dance was the Australian bush dance. The last thing in the concert was when the oldest person (who’s ninety seven years old) that used to go to the school went in front of the stage. I had a great Harmony Day.

On Friday 20th of March it was the school’s 95th birthday and we also celebrated Harmony Day. First of all people did all their acts and singing in the hall. After all the acts were finished Mrs Eppinger and Mrs Zent brought the 95th birthday cake into the hall. After the cake was in the hall, Hazel, who was 95 and Zara, who was 4, cut the cake together. Then everybody went outside to look in the library to see all the old pictures of the school and also to have some food. 15 minutes later we had a soccer match. It was really fun. I thought the food and pictures were brilliant.

On Harmony Day it also was the school’s birthday. We had to get dressed up in Orange or a national costume. I just wore shorts and an Italian soccer top from Italy of course. After school there was a soccer match. I was in it. Our team won. After the soccer match I had a souvlaki. It was YUM! Then I just went home.

On Friday it was Harmony Day. It was a delightful concert. I liked the Indian dance and the food. The best thing I liked was my speech. At first I was nervous but after I had finished I felt relieved. My mum loved the lamb. She wanted to take some home but the lamb was finished.

Monash Science Centre Excursion
On Friday the 21st of September it was the Grade 5’s and 6’s turn to visit the Monash Science Centre at Monash University. The students were introduced to Jacinta, who, along with the students’ help, explained the characteristics and differences between solids, liquids and gasses.
After this important information was clarified, our budding scientists were off to the laboratory to predict, observe and explain the reactions they were witnessing when mixing a number of substances with water. Was the reaction physical or chemical? Why was this happening? How is this happening?
The students also took some ideas for more experiments to be conducted either at school or at home. The experience was engaging and rewarding for everyone who attended, including the teachers. Thank you to Mr. Manuel for organising this trip for the school.
This Tribes activity was called "Reflecting Feelings" and involved the Grade 5/6 students acting out roleplays of different everyday life situations.. The main objectives was to build community inclusion, to teach and practise listening skills, and to share ideas and feelings about a given topic.

The year 5/6 teachers are using Level 4 of the V.E.L.S document to plan, teach and evaluate across all strands. They are committed to devloping programs to enhance children's learning across all curriculum areas and will be involved in professional development activities this year to improve all students' social and oral literacy skills.
The unit of work in Term 1 is based on the throughline 'Growing Up Great and Safe.' As part of this unit all students will use a range of resources, including ICT, to investigate the questions 'What makes me special?' and 'What is respect?'. They will continue to develop skills in design, creation and evaluation of a range of work projects and will use a range of thinking tools to assist with planning and organisation of ideas and information.
The grade 5/6's went to camp at Merrick’s lodge earlier this year. They had a fantastic time and were involved in many great activities. To read about it, please click here.
