And just like that we re are at the end of week 3.

Our prep students have settled in very well under the care of Mrs Marini and Miss Jones.

The school leaders have presented at assembly and are displaying our school values with pride and maturity.

Last Tuesday I proudly showed off our school to the members of the school review panel. They all were in awe of our facilities and the well-mannered students they chatted with, as well as the calm engaging classes they observed.

We truly are part of an incredible school!

Open Streets – A Huge Success at Glen Huntly Primary!

Yesterday, Glen Huntly Primary was buzzing with energy and excitement as we hosted our highly successful Open Streets event! With Garden Avenue closed for the morning, families and students enjoyed a safe, car-free space to walk, ride, and play on their way to school.

Our Breakfast Club started the day off right, providing fresh fruit and cereal for families to enjoy. The road transformed into a creative playground, with students filling the pavement with vibrant chalk art, adding colour and fun to the event.

There was no shortage of activities, with students enjoying bike riding over jumps and bumps, skipping ropes, hula hoops, and organised games led by our incredible Grade 6 student leaders. It was fantastic to see so many students and families actively participating and embracing the joy of active travel.

To measure the impact of this initiative, our Grade 6 Sustainability Monitors are conducting a weekly survey of student travel habits to see if more families are choosing to walk or ride to school. The goal of Open Streets is to reduce the number of cars on the road, making school drop-offs safer, cleaner, and better for the health and fitness of our families.

A huge thank you to Food Bank for supporting our free breakfast and to Glen Eira Council and the Bicycle Network for supporting this event by closing Garden Avenue, and to everyone who helped make the morning such a success.

We look forward to seeing even more families walking, riding, and scooting to school every day!

The event will occur again the following next two Thursdays both before school and after school.

Fundraising Update

I am very pleased to announce that we raised $40,000 in 2024 through fundraising efforts.

This is an incredible effort by the school community which we are truly grateful for.

This means that we are just over halfway to achieving our goal of $70.000 for the new playground on the east side.

Information Evenings

Thank you to all the families that attended last week ‘s information sessions. Our teachers presented a wealth of valuable information on the routines and expectations as well as the curriculum.

Welcome Picnic- Wednesday February 19

We would like to welcome all families to gather informally for a Welcome Picnic on the school oval (east side) next Wednesday 19^th February, commencing at 5.00pm and concluding at 6.30pm. Our specialist team will provide some activities for our students to participate in.

Families are invited to bring rugs, picnic chairs, food, and refreshments to enjoy the afternoon with other members of the school community.

There will be a pizza truck, The 3 Little Monsters selling pizza – Hawaiian, Margarita, Meat Lovers, BBQ Chicken and Vegetarian, and the GPA will be selling soft drinks at the canteen.

A few reminders

Parents/carers are responsible for their children after school and we ask that safe and fair play is encouraged by parents/carers.
As this is a school event, we request that students do not have access to mobile phones and other similar devices.
We ask that people either make use of the bins provided on the oval or take their rubbish home with them. A container will be provided for any can or bottle donations.

Permission Forms

There are a number of permissions we need to collect at the beginning of the year, including permission to use student photos for publicity, allergy information and other school related activities.

These permission forms have been sent out to all families. If required, you can collect hard copies from the office.

If families have not completed these permissions, can we please ask for these to be completed as soon as possible?

House Swimming

The Year 3-6 students and staff enjoyed another successful day at the House Swimming sports.

The students had a wonderful time using the newly opened pools and play areas.

Thank you to Ms Price and all staff who attended and assisted in organising the day.

Reporting to Parents in 2025

There will be four opportunities for parents to receive a progress update for their child in 2025.

Parents will :-

be invited for a ‘Meet the Teacher’ interview with your child’s teachers in week 5, Wednesday February 26. More detailed information will be sent very soon separately through Compass.
be provided a written report at the end of Term Two
be invited for an interview with teachers in Term 3
be provided a written report at the end of Term 4.

As usual, parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher at any time during the year to discuss their child’s progress and needs.

Congratulations to TheirCare

Our before and aftercare team, lead very capably by coordinators Liana and Georgia have received an exceeding rating in all areas of their recent appraisal.

We are so proud of them and their team, and we know our students are well cared for before and after school.

Students Arriving Late

Parents are reminded that if their child arrives to school after 9.05 that they must be signed in at the office.

Parents cannot drop their children off at the gate, they must accompany them into the office to sign them in – our children are too young to sign themselves in.

We acknowledge that this may be inconvenient for some families, however it is for the safety of the children that we require the parent to accompany them into school.

Glen Huntly Primary School Council

Glen Huntly Primary School is governed by our School Council.

The Council is made of volunteers from our parent community and also from our teaching staff, including myself.

We will be running nominations and elections for the 2025 School Council over the next few weeks. You may be interested in joining our Council and contributing to our school’s development over the next two years.

Harvey 6B – Supporting other students in Mathematics and helping them with their maths dictionaries.

As a school principal, one of the greatest joys of my role is witnessing the growth and development of our students.

It is a true privilege to celebrate their achievements and be part of their journey. With that in mind, our school newsletter often highlights the wonderful accomplishments of our children, as showcased below.

Congratulations to Sara in 6C who earlier this year won two prizes in drawing competitions organised by two different community events.

First prize in a drawing competition for 10-12 years olds organised by KMCC Melbourne. The theme was my dream playground. She received a $50 cash prize, a medal and a certificate.

Second prize in a drawing competition for 11-13 years olds organised by Art and Easel, Melbourne at Bengal Association of Victoria. She was presented with a certificate by John Mullahy (Member of Parliament, Glen Waverley).

Community Laneways

Kirsten Brooks manages the Community Laneways in Carnegie and Glen Huntly.

There has been growing enthusiasm for the Glen Huntly Community Laneway adjacent to GHPS, and an invitation has been offered to the school community about the space.
