Japanese

Japanese at GHPS

At Glen Huntly Primary we understand the importance of embracing different cultures and languages. We understand how interconnected they are in this multilingual, multicultural nation that is Australia.

Our students participate in weekly Japanese lessons over the course of a semester each year. They learn about Japanese culture through a variety of Japanese celebrations including Japanese Cultural Day, Hinamatsuri (Doll’s Festival) and Kodomo No Hi (Children’s Day), and in class “cooking” experiences such as making onigiri. Students learn to read and write Hiragana (with an introduction to Katakana and Kanji in context) and have opportunities to practise their skills in Japanese through games, songs, quizzes, role-plays and performances.

Through the Japanese language program, we strive to provide our students with opportunities to engage with a world beyond their local communities and to gain an understanding of culture through language.
